Eriol is the newest student in Sakura Kinomoto's class. When she first meets him, Sakura feels as if she's met Eriol before. Unknowingly to her, she has. Eriol is the half re-incarnate of Clow Read. When Clow had re-incarnated into two people, Eriol and Fujitaka Kinomoto, Eriol had received all of Clow's powers and memories by mistake while Fujitaka had none. Eriol's mission then became to make someone more powerful than him so that person can help him split his power with Fujitaka as was the original plan.

By causing "trouble" for Sakura, Eriol helped her to change all her Clow Cards into Sakura Cards and in turn, she helped him give half of his power to Fujitaka. Though Eriol looks to be about eleven-years-old, he is in fact the same age as Fujitaka. He stayed that size because he had to be able to enter Sakura's class. But after he gave half of his power away, he could no longer change his appearance to his true age. Nonetheless, Kaho Mizuki loves him. Tomoyo Daidouji once commented that Eriol watched Kaho with gentle eyes. This was because Eriol loved Kaho in return.
