DIGIMON
CHANGES TO DIGIMON ADVENTURE

This is where you can find out which first season Digimon episodes were changed when brought to North America. I haven't seen every episode in Japanese so the list isn't complete. If you have something to contribute, please let me know!

Screencaps in this section were made from footage from Megchan.

Opening Theme

The Japanese opening theme is the song "Butterfly" sung by Wada Kouji. The English opening had a new theme. For the most part, the footage for the English theme was taken from the original Japanese opening, it was just edited slightly differently. A few scenes, like Matt riding Garurumon past a full moon, were not featured in the English opening, probably due to time constraints.

Ending Theme

The dub ending theme is simply the opening theme played again. The original Japanese version had two ending themes: "I Wish" and "Keep On" by AiM. The footage shown during these ending themes never made it to North America.

General Changes

There are less jokes. Period. This is true of every single episode.

In the Japanese version, the term "evolve" is used. The term "digivolve" was a creation of the dub.

Also, lots of Japanese text that appears in the series was digitally edited to be English.

Episode 3: Garurumon

In this episode, Matt tells Tai that he and TK are half-brothers. In the Japanese version, they are full brothers. When their parents got divorced, Matt went with his father, and TK with his mother. They have different last names because TK's mother changed TK's last name to her's. Later in the dub version, when their parents are introduced, it also becomes clear they are full brothers.

Episode 8: Evil Shows His Face

There was a scene cut out when they're taking baths. When Joe hesitantly walks in with his towel around his waist, Tai and Matt get out of the water to force Joe into the bath, and in the process, expose their backsides. Dialogue around this scene is changed slightly to accommodate the cut.

Episode 9: Subzero Ice Punch!

The fight scene between Matt and Tai is shortened slightly.

Episode 27: The Gateway to Home!

In dub, they were giving Nanimon soda to drink. In the original, they were giving him beer in an attempt to get him drunk.

Episode 30: Almost Home Free

They cut out Matt's attempt at hitchhiking. Instead, they make it seem like he's too embarrassed to bring himself to do it. In the Japanese version, a young lady pulls up and basically hits on him. He refuses her ride, and ends up blushing about it. This is why he's blushing in the English version.

Also from this episode, Sora's blond "cousin" that picked them up is actually a stranger. After Sora and Mimi try to get them a ride, he finds them attractive and picks them up.

Episode 33: Out on the Town

Pumpkinmon and Gotsumon are not sent to "Myotismon's dungeon". They are actually killed by Myotismon.

Episode 34: The Eighth Child Revealed

In the dub, when Demidevimon finds Wizardmon by the crow's nest, Wizardmon says something about finding chili sauce. In the original, it's a bottle of beer, and Wizardmon pretends to be drunk.

Episode 43: Playing Games

At Puppetmon's mansion they play with real guns. The dub version cuts out all the firearms, including TK fumbling with a machine gun and Puppetmon firing at him.

Episode 48: My Sister's Keeper

During the flashback, Tai's mother slaps him in the face. This is edited out.
