This short film was created and released before the Digimon anime it shares its title with. The plot of this story takes place before the first anime series and tells the story of how the original eight digidestined became the digidestined through witnessing a battle between Greymon and Parrotmon. It also explains the first encounter Tai and Kari have with a Koromon.

Back when all eight digidestined lived in Highton View Terrance, a Koromon came from the Digital World and met up with Tai and Kari. Through a series of events, the Koromon digivolves to Greymon to fight Parrotmon. This battle is witnessed by eight children, who later become the original eight digidestined. During the battle, a light processed their information leading too the creation of the tags, crests, and digivices. This is also when these devices were linked to the digimon and children.

The events of the first movie are re-told and explained in episode 45 of the anime.
