CHAPTER 9
Advance Notice from the Mask
Riku tells Daisuke's sleeping figure that she likes him. Somewhere within Daisuke's mind, he hears that someone is calling him. Daisuke slowly opens his eyes. He asks Riku if she just said that she liked him. Riku panics after realizing that Daisuke was awake and could hear her. She runs from Daisuke and towards the door. At that same moment, Takeshi brings Daisuke his backpack. Riku crashes into him as she exits. Takeshi is confused, but is even more confused when a supposedly sick Daisuke jumps out of bed and runs out the door after Riku.
Outside the school, Daisuke continues to chase after Riku. She questions why he is following her, and Daisuke replies that he wants her to hear what he has to say. Daisuke finally catches up with her and grabs her hand. She stops running, but refuses to turn and face Daisuke. She fears that Daisuke will reject her. Daisuke blushes and asks her if she would like to walk home with him. Riku asks him why, and Daisuke tells her that it's not something he can explain at that moment. Before they can finish their conversation, men in black suits appear and interrupt them. They ask for Daisuke, but before he has a chance to answer, the men grab him, restrain him, and take him away.
Riku watches this and is really confused. Another man appears behind her and tells her to inform the teacher that Daisuke is sick and went home from school early. Before Riku can ask him what is going on, he thanks her and leaves. Riku can't believe that she just witnessed Daisuke being kidnapped.
Thrown to the ground in some building, Daisuke starts to ask where he is and demands to be released. A teenaged boy in the room says that he was waiting for Daisuke, but he refers to Daisuke as "Gondawara" (reference to chapter seven when Dark in control of Daisuke's body calls himself "Gondawara Saburota" after he saves Riku). Daisuke is confused, but the teenager tells him that it was hard to find "Gondawara" considering that it turned out to be a fake name. We now find out that Daisuke is being held in the "Saga Entertainment" building. He now sits on a couch opposite this teenager. Daisuke wonders where he is and why he's there. The teenaged boy then introduces himself as Keiji Saga. He explains that he is a producer and a part-time student at Daisuke's school.

Keiji gives Daisuke his business card, and Daisuke wonders why he even has such a card. Keiji is surprised that Daisuke has never heard of Saga Entertainment. Daisuke freaks when he learns that it is a production enterprise. Keiji tells Daisuke that this is about business and tells Daisuke to take off his clothes.
Daisuke panics and refuses, but Keiji jumps him. The man that talked to Riku earlier, Hunabashi, comes in as Daisuke starts screaming and tells Keiji to get off him. Keiji tells Daisuke that he talks too much, and Daisuke freaks when he realizes what Keiji is pulling down. He yells at Keiji to stop. Hunabashi interrupts and asks Keiji what he is doing. Keiji then takes out a tape measure and says it's time to begin. Needless to say, Daisuke is totally confused/horrified at this point.
Outside the door, the men in the black suits comment to themselves about Keiji's behaviour. In the background you can hear Keiji comment on Daisuke, and the men think that he sounds like an old pervert even though he is only taking measurements of Daisuke.
Now in some baggy outfit, Daisuke asks what he is wearing. Keiji asks Daisuke what he thinks of the outfit. He comments that it fits Daisuke perfectly. Daisuke asks what he means by that and wonders what the clothes are for. Keiji replies that it is Daisuke's costume. He then continues on to explain that it is what Daisuke will be wearing when he stars in Keiji's commercial.
Back at school, Riku attempts to tell the teacher that Daisuke has been kidnapped, but the teacher interrupts her to say that Daisuke's mother just called to have him excused early. Riku is confused, and then remembers what Hunabashi told her to tell her teacher. Riku is not sure what to do, but hopes that Daisuke is alright.
Back with Keiji, Daisuke continues to refuse the chance to be in Keiji's commercial. Daisuke says that he has no idea why he is being asked, and that he doesn't want to be anymore famous than he already is. Keiji asks him what he means by that, and Daisuke is unsure how to respond. Daisuke grabs his jacket and is about to leave, when Keiji asks him if he's heard of Dark.
Daisuke freezes in his tracks. Keiji explains that Dark is going to steal the Moonlight Mask from the Art Museum at midnight tomorrow. Keiji wants to use Dark in his commercial. He explains further that the concept of the commercial is "transformation" and that they want to have a normal boy transform into Dark. He also tells Daisuke that he'll take care of the transformation sequence. In the meantime, Daisuke is struggling to get the weird clothes over his head. Keiji asks Daisuke if he would like to play the Dark's original self for the commercial tomorrow. Before Daisuke can say no, Keiji tells Daisuke that he has written permission from his mother. Hunabashi then proceeds to show him the paper signed by his mother.
Daisuke sweatdrops. He mentally yells at his mother. There's a cute little image of Emiko in the corner saying that she agreed cause they'd make Daisuke look good, and she would get some autographs. Even with all this, Daisuke still refuses. Keiji gives him a sly look, and then pulls out an envelope. He tells Daisuke that inside the envelope is an embarrassing picture of his girlfriend. Daisuke takes this to mean Riku and struggles to get it back. Keiji tells Daisuke that this isn't the photo, and that he gave the photo to the officer in charge at the museum. Keiji tells Daisuke that if he's in the commercial, he'll give him the photo. Daisuke reluctantly agrees and as Keiji finishes his sentence, Daisuke storms out of the place.
As Daisuke leaves, he tries to figure out how he's going to pull off being himself and Dark at the same time. Back inside, Keiji comments to Hunabashi that they just learned that Daisuke likes Riku. Keiji also says that this will prevent the police from interfering with the filming.
Back at Daisuke's house, his mother is polishing some of the artifacts that Dark has stolen. She finds them all beautiful and comments on how no one would ever suspect them to be in their basement.
Daisuke storms into the room and yells at his mother. He's furious at her for getting him stuck in a commercial. Emiko merely turns around and asks him when he got home. Daisuke yells at her some more and asks her what they're going to do. He points out that if he transforms, Daisuke will disappear. Emiko calmly replies that he's forgetting that there is another Daisuke. There's a cute image of With watching TV. Daisuke's eyes go wide when he realizes what she's suggesting.
Daisuke pats With transformed as him on the shoulder. Daisuke tells his little friends that they'll have to train hard in order to be ready for tomorrow. With mispronounces "train hard", and then says "daisuki" instead of "Daisuke". Daisuke yells that it is "suke" and not "suki". Daisuke gives With the script in the hopes that he'll learn it by tomorrow. With replies with "kyuu". Daisuke tells him that he can't go around saying "kyuu". Daisuke then tells us that he feels he needs to get Riku's photo more than he needs to steal the Moonlight Mask.
At the bottom of the page, Daisuke asks With where he's escaping to. With, of course, replies with "kyuu". Daisuke yells after him, and there's anther "kyuu". Then it says that there are some running sounds.
Back at the school, a bunch of girls are talking about Dark and plan to go to the museum to meet the legendary thief. One of the girls asks Risa a question, but before she has a chance to reply, Hiwatari interrupts her. He asks her if she has any time afterschool. Risa stares blindly back at Hiwatari. The girls in the background are amazed that Hiwatari asked Risa out.
Afterschool, Risa and Hiwatari walking down a crowed street. Risa asks Hiwatari if he had something to say to her. Hiwatari replied that he doesn't. Risa then complains that he asked her out in front of all the girls and that they will probably make a scandal out of it. Hiwatari tells her that after looking around the school, he found that Risa had the most feminine appearance. He then tells her that he is going to study her and that she must give full cooperation as a citizen. Risa isn't really sure what he is talking about, and tells him that she doesn't have time to let him study her appearance. Before she can finish her sentence, she realizes that everyone is looking in their direction and that a bunch of girls are going ga-ga over Hiwatari. Risa realizes that he doesn't look half-bad, but she doesn't really like guys with glasses.

Risa asks Hiwatari to take off his glasses. Hiwatari asks why, but Risa insists. Hiwatari carefully removes his glasses and a flash of pain hits him. His glasses drop to the floor and he lends against a wall for support. He wonders if it has finally come. Risa, picks up his glasses, and being the ditz she is, says that she didn't know his eyes were that bad. She hands Hiwatari his glasses, then tells him that she has somewhere else to be and leaves.
Later that day, outside the museum, Dark and With (as Daisuke) are talking. Dark is excited that he is going to get a chance to steal something in this kind of situation. A little Emiko at the side shows that both Dark and With (as Daisuke) are wearing the same outfit just in case they transform. Dark tells With that he'll steal the mask and Riku's photo and that With should pretend to be Daisuke.
A reporter explains that since it is National Fountain Day, everyone is at the museum to see Dark in person. In the background, Keiji pushes through the crowd trying to film his commercial. Keiji wonders if the filming will go alright, and Hunabashi says with so many reporters, Dark has to be caught on tape anyway.
As the clock strikes nine, Dark begins to run into the museum with cameras recording all over the place. With looks up into the sky, then turns and runs through the crowds. Keiji asks him where he is going, and With replies that he is going to the washroom. With jumps of a ledge and in the air, he transforms into his black winged form and begins to fly.
Inside the museum, the security is on high alert since the mask was just stolen. Dark mutters that it was easy to steal the mask, but wonders why there are so many women running around with envelopes. One of the women spots him, and Dark is then forced to run as a swarm of women chase after him. Dark complains that he can't hit any of them, and the next thing you know, they all manage to jump him. Lying under a pile of blushing females, Dark tells then that if they were going to jump him, they should have done it a bit sexier. Dark manages to get out from under the pile as a girl goes crazy screaming that she got to touch Dark. Dark escapes, but stops when he hears a voice.
"Looking for this?"
Dark turns to see a very attractive women standing before him. In her hands is an envelope that catches Dark's eye. Dark whistles, and then asks the women to had over the envelope. Daisuke complains to Dark in his mind, but Dark says that all children should close their eyes.

Dark moves closer to the women and brings his face close to hers. Dark tells her that if she doesn't hand the envelope over, he'll have to go rough on her. Just as their lips are about to meet, the women says that Dark is weak in front of this kind of appearance. The next thing you know, the woman handcuffs Dark to the wall. Dark remembers what Keiji said to Daisuke about needing permission from the police to film at the museum. He also remembers Keiji saying that he gave Riku's photo to the officer in charge at the museum. The women says that she knew Dark would come for the photo. Dark gets smug look on his face and stares the women in the eye before saying...
"I didn't know you had such a hobby... Sir Satoshi Hiwatari - Commander in Chief!"
Back in Dark's mind, Daisuke realizes that the incredibly attractive women standing in front of his is really Hiwatari cross-dressing! Daisuke completely freaks out!
Hiwatari states that whenever they talk, Dark always manages to escape. He takes out a bottle and tells Dark that he'll have to sleep for awhile.
Before Hiwatari does anything, Dark comments that if Hiwatari was really a girl, he'd be just his type. Hiwatari takes this as a compliment and thanks him. Just as Hiwatari is about to catch Dark, With (looking like Daisuke) appears behind them wearing a mask. With tells Hiwatari that he's the real Daisuke. Both Dark and Hiwatari realize that With is holding the real mask. With runs and Hiwatari follows him.
Dark is released and Daisuke is happy that he gave With special training. Dark breaks the handcuffs and holds the envelope in his hands. Now all Dark wishes to do is make his escape. Daisuke thinks back on what just happened and notices how sad Hiwatari had looked. He wonders if Hiwatari followed With on purpose.
Hiding in the girl's washroom at the museum, Risa waits for her chance to meet Dark. She wonders how long she'll have to wait there and complains that she can't really see in the dark. Next to her is a laser and she wonders what it is and its purpose. She figures that there is no point in waiting and wonders if Dark has left yet. In the meantime, Hiwatari (as a girl) is still chasing With (as Daisuke). Risa goes into dreamland and imagines herself running into Dark and them hugging and everything. She goes all fangirly, but stops when she hears a noise. She wonder if it could be Dark.
With runs from Hiwatari and hides behind a pillar. As Hiwatari comes up behind the pillar, With panics. Hiwatari tells With that he doesn't want to capture him and orders him to return the mask.
At the exact same moment, Risa gathers up her courage to venture out into the washroom and meet Dark. She stands and is about to take a step, when Hiwatari notices her. His eyes go wide as he runs he runs towards her - call out for her to stay still. The floor under their feet move.
Outside the museum, Riku is wandering around looking for her sister. She catches sight of Daisuke and Dark jumping from one roof to another. Dark sees Riku and transforms. She calls out to Daisuke and the two Daisukes (With and Daisuke) freeze in mid-air, just to fall to the ground. Riku runs towards Daisuke as Daisuke yells at a dazed With to transform. Daisuke greats Riku, and she asks him what he was doing on the roof. Before he can reply, With transforms into a very strange looking Dark. Riku takes on look at him before screaming at the top of her lungs.
Back outside the museum, a reporter reports that Dark has been spotted. A bunch of girls go ga-ga thinking that they may have a chance to see him. Takeshi's father tells his men to prevent Dark's escape and arrest him. Now, this entire mob of people head towards where they heard Riku scream. And Keiji goes nuts trying to get Dark on film.
Daisuke tells With to run in a certain direction, then grabs Riku's arm and pulls her in another direction. Riku asks why she has to run, and Daisuke replies that if the don't hurry, they'll be run over.
The reporters and police lose sight of Dark and ask a nearby women if she saw anything. This passer-by turns out Daisuke's mother. She points them in the direction of the museum where someone who looks like Dark is using a ladder to climb onto the roof. All the reporters and police offericers head in that direction and chase after "Dark". It turns out that the man climbing the roof is Daisuke's father in Dark's outfit. He complains that he's too old for this type of thing.

In front of a fountain at what looks to by a near-by park, Daisuke catches his breathe and tells Risa that they should be safe here. Riku comments that she didn't know Dark was that famous - she just thought he was a pervert. She can't believe that Dark is really a theif because he makes silly mistakes. Risa tells Daisuke about the time Dark left a stolen artifact in her house. She continues to say that for a moment she thought that Dark was really Daisuke. She then shakes it off and tells Daisuke to just forget what she's saying. She then remembers her sister and begins to run make towards the museum. Before she gets very far, Daisuke speaks...
"What are you going to do if I say that he is me?"
Hidden behind the bushes, Keiji is video taping the entire thing with his hidden camera. Hunabushi complains, but Keiji replies that it is a personal hobby and that he is not going to use this in the commercial.
Riku asks Daisuke what he is saying. She thinks that Daisuke is just saying this in response to what she said in the Nurse's Office. Riku tells Daisuke to forget about it, because she knows that Daisuke likes Risa. Daisuke holds the mask near his face in an elegant fashion. He tells Risa that he did love Risa at first, but now he likes Ri...

Just as Daisuke says the name, firecrackers go off in the distance preventing Riku from hearing the name. Her eyes go wide as she watches Dark run away from her.
Keiji takes the camera down from his face and stares in shock. He cannot believe that Daisuke actually is Dark. Hunabushi plays with his camera. Keiji acts him what he is doing, and Hunabushi replies that he doesn't need a visual for a personal hobby.
Deep in a well, Hiwatari and Risa sit in knee-deep in water. Hiwatari tells Risa that the firecrackers make the end of the day. Risa asks "her" if the well trap was always there. Hiwatari explains that it is a useless trap against Dark. Risa muffles a sneeze and wonders when she'll get to see Dark again. Hiwatari tells her that he failed in catching Dark. Risa comments they in some ways, both of them fell into a sad love with Dark. Hiwatari says that she's probably right and removes his suit jacket. He places it over Risa to help keep her warm. Risa looks at the attractive "woman" without her jacket on and her eyes go wide as it finally clicks.
As Hiwatari begins to climb up the well wall, Risa asks him if studying her appearance helped at all. Hiwatari replies that hers didn't and Risa gets a pressure point.

Back at Daisuke's home, his mother congratulates him on doing a good job. After she hugs him, Daisuke asks if the mask With had was a fake. His mother explains that there are two different masks and that the one With had was the Sunlight mask that their family has had all along, not the Moonlight mask he just stole.
Emiko says that there's a legend about the two masks: if one is wearing the sunlight mask, they can't tell a lie, and that the moonlight one causes people to be honest with themselves. His mothers asks him is he wants to try the sunlight mask on. Daisuke refuses, complaining to himself that he didn't know the legend but told the truth to Riku anyway. Emiko further explains that they used the Sunlight mask to trick Hiwatari, since he would notice if they had used a fake piece of art. She also says that it's good the two masks are reunited again.
Their front door opens, and Daisuke's dad arrives with a twig sticking out of his hair. He comments that Daisuke is amazing for doing this kind of thing every night. He asks how the commercial went and Daisuke panics that he forgot about With. The next panel shows a shot of With as Daisuke crying on the street with passersby staring at him.
Emiko picks up the envelope that supposedly contains an embarrassing photo of Riku. She asks if Daisuke bought her a card and Daisuke freaks out and tries to remove the envelope from her hands. Emiko opens the envelope to reveal that there was nothing inside but a blank sheet of paper.
Daisuke sits in his room with With (With has a note next to him saying that Daisuke went and rescued him). Daisuke complains that the photo thing was really a trick. He thinks about it and wonders where Kenji would get an embarrassing photo of Riku in the first place. His mind wanders and Dark calls him a pervert. Daisuke denies it, but Dark says he can hear his thoughts. Daisuke wonders if Riku heard him confess to her. Dark says he'll find out the answer to that question for himself.
Just then a thought hits Daisuke. He wonders what will happen to Dark if Riku returns his feelings. He starts asking Dark, but Dark complains he's sleepy and for Daisuke to leave him alone. Daisuke smiles. He realizes that things have changed and that he now feels at peace with Dark inside of him.
The next day at school, Daisuke is freaking out because he's too embarrassed to talk to Riku. He pulls himself together and asks a female classmate if she knows where Riku is. The classmate says that Riku has left already.
Outside the school, Riku is stopped by Keiji and Hunabashi. She recognizes them as the kidnappers from earlier. Kenji takes out a mini-disk and hands it to Riku. Riku is shocked, but before she can ask any questions, Keiji walks off saying he has to get back to work and that she should tell Daisuke that the mini-disk he gave her is Daisuke's payment for the commercial. Riku is confused and Hunabashi gives her a business card, telling her to tell Daisuke to call if he doesn't think the mini-disk is enough. Keiji says that he got some great shots of Daisuke and for her to make sure to watch the commercial on the 25th. Before Keiji drives off, he says that Daisuki looked his best when he was with Riku.
Riku looks down at the mini-disk in her hands and then puts it into her walkman and listens. As it starts to play, the panels show Daisuke running to catch up with her. Riku listens and hears her own voice from the night before. On the tape, the fireworks don't interrupt Daisuke's voice and she hears Daisuke says that it is Riku that he likes.
Daisuke finally catches up to Riku and asks her if she heard him the night before. With tears in her eyes, Riku turns around and tells Daisuke that she heard his words just now. She starts crying and Daisuke freaks out. He asks her if it's because she doesn't like him, but she says that she's crying because she does like him.

Takeshi shows up out of nowhere and annoys Daisuke asking what he did to make her cry. Takeshi playfully argues with Daisuke and Daisuke says he didn't do anything. Takeshi pulls back and holds his hand up to compare Daisuke's height. He asks if Daisuke got taller. Daisuke is taken back, but thinks about it. He realizes that he's seeing things from Dark's eyelevel, and that maybe he's more like Dark that he originally thought. Daisuke pictures Dark walking down the road in front of him.
Keiji is driving off in his limo. He talks about Daisuke and the other side of him. He and Hunabashi agree they should find Daisuke in a few years to work with him again.
At the Niwa house, Emiko is freaking out with a remote control in her hand, frantically gesturing her family to come watch it. Since it's a manga, the commercial consists of shots of Dark and Daisuke. It's really pretty. As it's going on, Emiko fangirls, Kousuke tries to calm her down and Daisuke is shocked at how cool Dark looks in action.
Daisuke hears the clock and realizes he'll be late if he doesn't hurry off to school. He rushes out the dorr and his mother calls after him to be careful.
Daisuke smiles as he runs down the street. For the first time, he starts thinking of challenging Dark and winning. On Daisuke's back are the ghosts of wings.
