ESCAFLOWNE
RANDOM POINTS
Here are some random points of interest and a small comparison...
Personalities
Pretty much every character in this movie is out-of-character. Since the movie and the series have nothing to do with each other, all the character building in the series is completely useless. This is very annoying at points. In the series, we saw Hitomi grow into a powerful female character. In the movie, she's a depressed school girl who wants to kill herself.
Designs
Every character in this movie has been redesigned. The animation style - everything from costumes, to the way the faces are drawn - has been changed. This helps prove that the movie and the series have nothing to do with each other. The biggest character change has to be Millerna. In the series she's a princess with long flowing blond hair that is almost always wearing dresses. In the movie, she's dressed more like a warrior, and her hair is brown and tied back into a ponytail.
Mecha
Even the guymelefs are different in the movie. Actually, there are only two guymelefs. Some other differences included Allen's ship. It is not the flying airship, the Crusade, but a wagon.
Fights
In the series you are used to guymelef battles and swordfights. In the movie, there are only two guymelef - Escaflowne and Alseides. The only guymelef battle is between them. Many of the other battles are fought with swords. At a few times, these battles even take place on horseback.
Magic
The use of magic is also different. Hitomi does not possess the same powers that she does in the series. The main use of magic is by Van, Folken and Dilandau. All three possess dragon blood, and therefore can use a magical force, almost like telekinesis, to fight and defend themselves.
Effects
The special effects used in this movie are much like the ones used in the series. However, certain effect, such as those used with Escaflowne's cape, are better than those found in the series. The amount of detail is exceptional.
Allusions
There are many allusions in the movie that come directly out of the series. An example of this can be Hitomi's pendant, or even the tree Hitomi finds Van's near. This use of these allusions is a nice touch - especially if you've seen the series.
Detail
There is a lot of little details in this movie; for example, the dragon's eye in the moon, the disappearing and re-appearing of the mystic moon, and the rose of Millerna's armor. You might want to keep an eye out of them.
Voices
For the most part, the voices are the same as those in the series. The only difference is Millerna, who has a completely different voice. Also, the way the voices sound in general is different. Due to a lack of a better word, they almost sound "hallow".
Music
Yoko Kanno comes through with a beautiful musical score. The climax has a deeper inpact thankd to the music. It's truely moving. After seeing the movie, I all but guarantee that the song Sora will be in your memory. It's the song that flows from beginning to end in this movie. It's written in ancient Romanian and tells the story of legend. Anyway, here are the lyrics to it...

Comments
At first, this movie really bugged me. I didn't like it one bit! All my favorite characters were completely different. I had to continuously remind myself that the movie and the series had nothing to do with each other. This movie might have annoyed my beyond belief, but for some reason, as watched the ending credits roll by, I couldn't help but think how truly lovely this story really is...
