VAN FANEL

Van Fanel is the young 15 year old king of the rural country Fanelia. He has many mood swings and keeps to himself, but his heart is pure and kind. Van is of a race called the Draconians (Ryujinbito - Dragon-god people). This blood that flows through his veins allows him to grow beautiful white wings and fly.

Van is the pilot of the guymelef Escaflowne. It is bound to him by a blood contract, and Van is eventually connected to it. Escaflowne obeys his thoughts. However, all the damage Escaflowne suffers, Van suffers through wounds on his own body.

Van's family is all dead except for his older brother, Folken. However, Van feels a strong hatred towards him, as Folken is the one who burned Fanelia to the ground. To Van, his only family is Merle. He feels much hatred and pain, until Hitomi shows him the light. Through all that they face, Hitomi and Van are very close, to the point where Van is willing to risk his life to protect her.
