LELOLA RELATED QUESTIONS

How do you pronounce "LELOLA"?
"LEE-LOW-LA!"

What does "LELOLA" mean?
Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't stand for anything. It's just a made-up word, although I hear it has actual meanings in different languages.

Why do you capitalize "LELOLA" the way you do?
It's a stylistic thing. Small "L"s and capital "I"s look alike in English. To avoid confusion, I prefer to spell LELOLA using all capital letters. I'd write it "LeLoLa" or "Lelola", but I dislike the way that looks. I prefer LELOLA to be completely capitalized, and if that's not possible, to be written in all small letters ("lelola").

What's the history of this website?
There's an actual page dedicated to the history of LELOLA. Check it out!

Why did you call your website "LELOLA"?
That's explained in the site's history. You can read it here. ^_~

Can I use your pictures on my site?
Probably. Please see LELOLA's policy for more information.

Can I use your information on my site?
That's answered in LELOLA's policy.

Can I use your quotes on my site?
Sure. All that I ask is that you don't take too many of them.

Can I use your layout?
No.

Can I copy your coding?
No.

Do you collect personal information?
LELOLA does not collect personal information. I don't care who you are, where you're from or what kind of computer you have. Standard information is logged by the server when you visit this website, but that's true of almost all websites.

The only information I sometimes collect is usernames and e-mail addresses, which are used with permission when displaying user submitted material to this website on this website.

Why did you collect/post e-mail addresses with submissions?
I collect/post e-mail addresses along with usernames to avoid confusion. Many people have similar, if not the same usernames. From example, crediting a submission to "Sakura" doesn't mean much since there are tons of "Sakura"s out there. However, crediting a submission to Sakura at a certain e-mail address differentiates this Sakura from every other Sakura.

Does LELOLA have advertisements?
Nope. None at all. ^^

Why am I seeing ads at LELOLA?
This has nothing to do with LELOLA. There are no advertisements on LELOLA. If you're seeing pop-ups ads, it could be due to a few reasons. Firstly, you could have spyware/adware installed on your computer. Secondly, you could have recently visited a website with "pop-unders" -- ads that pop up once you leave the website, or are set to go off at a certain interval after you close the website. For more information, please check out the almighty Google's information page on this by clicking here.

How much money do you make on LELOLA?
Nothing. I pay for LELOLA out of my own pocket. If anything, I lose money on LELOLA.

How much money does LELOLA cost?
It doesn't cost that much (I am a university student, after all), but it's still quite a bit.

Can I work for LELOLA?
I'm going to be brutally honest here: No.

Can I help you with a section?
That depends. If you want to make a section from scratch, then my answer will ultimately be no. If you want to donate something I'm missing or don't have access to, there's no harm in asking. If I'm planning to do it myself, I'll probably turn you down. If I've been looking for it, I'll probably take a chance on you.

Where can I find old pics and quotes of the week?
I have no archive for them up on LELOLA. If you're feeling suicidal, you can find all the old quotes of the week in the news archive. The pics of the week are a little trickier, but they're all still uploaded to LELOLA. If you know where I store my pics of the week, it takes about three seconds to find them all. Mind you, the older ones are so bad they're kind of embarrassing. ^^;

Can I use something of yours for a school project?
Sure thing.

How do I cite LELOLA in a bibliography/works cited list?
According to the MLA format, you cite online documents a the following:
Author's name (last name first). Document title. Date of Internet publication. Date of access <URL>.

For LELOLA, you don't have access to the date of publication, so leave that blank. Depending on the style you use, it should look something like this:

Chan, Pan. "Title of the Section." LELOLA. Today's Date. <http://www.LELOLA.net/thisisabadexample/whatever.shtml>

Can you add a [insert name of anime/manga here] section?
I never have a good answer for this question, but if you want to suggest sections you'd like to see, please do. It tells me where your interests lie.

Who is behind LELOLA?
Little old me. *waves* My name is Pan. It's nice to meet you.

Who maintains LELOLA?
Uh... me.

Who makes LELOLA's graphics?
Most of the time it's me. On the rare occasion someone else makes them, it should be mentioned. I really dislike taking credit for other people's work.

Who writes LELOLA's content?
If it's not credited to someone/somewhere else, it was probably me.

How do you make screenshots?
I take most of my screenshots with a program called PowerDVD. On most (not all) versions of the program, there's an option that allows you to take screenshots by hitting a button shaped like a camera or the letter "C" on the keyboard. This allows me to screencap an episode of an anime while I'm watching it.

I used to resize every single one of my images in an image program and then save them in JPG format (screenshots are usually taken as BMP files), but now I use a program called Easy Thumbnails to help with the re-sizing and saving. It saves me about an hour per episode. That being said, it still usually takes me about forty-five minutes to watch an episode of an anime and screecap it to my liking, sift through the screencaps I want to keep, and re-save the images to LELOLA-worthy quality.

Where do you get your quotes?
For the most part, I write them down while I'm watching something. My room is littered with hundreds of pieces of paper with quotes written on them. This is why you'll sometimes see lots of quotes in a row from the same series (guess what I'm watching right now) and why you'll sometimes see me repeat quotes. If I repeat a quote, it probably means I forgot to put an "X" next to it last time I used it. I have a horrible memory for these things.

Where do you get your pictures?
I can't say anything for me three years ago and before, but I try my best to credit images I didn't take/screencap/scan myself.

Where do you get your quotes/pictures of the week?
The quotes come from the same place the rest of my quotes come. If the pic I alter for the pic of the week isn't mine, I try and credit where I got it in the update associated with it.

Why do you always post the new quotes/pictures of the week on Sunday?
I don't always, but it's, umm... tradition?

What image programs do you use?
I only really use two programs: Paint Shop Pro v7 and the MS Paint that came with Windows 98.

How do you make your graphics?
I play with Paint Shop Pro. As anyone who makes graphics will tell you, after you play with images and a program long enough, you'll eventually develop your own style. As for MS Paint, I usually only use it to crop images and to draw straight lines and borders.

Where do you get your fonts?
I've collected close to a thousand fonts over the years. I have no idea where I got all of them, but you can find numerous font sites via Google. ^_~

How do you outline your text in images?
I do this using the text function in Paint Shop Pro. I go to the "Tool Options" feature for text and make the width a value like 4. Then I input text with the "stroke" color whatever color I want the outline to be. I input text with no stroke (only fill) over top and that's what creates the outline.

There's another way to do it. While it isn't my favorite, it works better for lots of people and works in older version of the program. To make an outline, create a blank image in the color you want the outline to be. Input your text as a floating section on the outline color background. From the "Selection" options on the top menu, select "Modify" and then "Expand". Choose how many pixels wide you want the border around your text to be. (If it asks you about "defloating the layer", just select "Yes".) From the top menu, select "Edit", and then "Copy Merged". Go to the image you want to put the text on, and select "Edit" from the top menu, then "Paste as New Layer". Viola, you should have outlined text.

If that makes no sense, my best advice is to play around with the program a bit. I'm no expert of graphics and do this for fun. I'm not the best person to ask for too much help since I barely know what I'm doing. I also have no idea how to use Adobe programs. Sorry!

How do I save pictures off LELOLA?
Put your mouse over the image you want to save. In Internet Explorer, right-click and select "Save Picture As...". A window should appear. Choose where on your computer you want to save the image and what you want the image to be named. Select "Save" and that's it.

Why do you update your splash images and main logo so rarely?
Simple answer: If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Where do you get your news?
A variety of sources. I believe in crediting my sources, so they'll usually be posted in my news updates.

Are you selective in your news updates? Why?
I've come under some criticism saying that I merely take news from others sites. In my defensive, I don't copy and paste news from others sites unless I have a reason to. I only post news I think the visitors to this site will be interested in. I filter through a variety of sources and if something catches my eye, I'll post it. If the source I read it from put it in a way that has no reason to be summarized, I might copy and paste (and credit, of course) what the other site said.

That being said, there's a lot of news I don't update on -- mainly on merchandise and titles I've found that don't stimulate much in the way of interest for my visitors.

Why can't I see your newest updates?
If you're not seeing LELOLA's new updates, there are two main possibilities. The first is that it's a server error that's telling your computer that the site hasn't been updated. This causes your computer to keep pulling up old versions of the site from your harddrive. This error happens very rarely, and I usually catch it before it gets out of hand. It's happened twice in LELOLA's past, but the chances of it happening again are rather small (knock on wood).

The second reason is because your computer thinks LELOLA hasn't been updated and keeps using old cached files instead of downloading the news ones.

If either of these two things happen, go to the main page, hold down the CTRL button and hit "refresh". That fully refreshes the page and should hopefully overwrite your computer's old version. Also try clearing your Temporary Internet Files by selecting "Tools" - "Internet Options" from the top menu in Internet Explorer.

Why do you make so many news updates?
Something to note is that I usually post news when I'm really busy and therefore can't update much. News updates are a lot like "filler episodes" for LELOLA. It means I want to post something, but am really pressed for time. For example, you'll usually see a large string of news-related updates around times of stress in my life.

How do you get so many hits?
Because this site does not contain subliminal messages.

Can I affiliate with LELOLA?
I'm not accepting any more affiliates, so the answer is no.

I'd also like to mention what it means to affiliate. These days there are some sites that have rows and rows of affiliates. It never used to be like that. Affiliating was only done with two or three closely linked websites so that they could share hits and sometimes even information. Recently, it seems to have turned into a free-for-all with many sites affiliating tons of other sites they have no real affiliation with.

How do you update every page of LELOLA so quickly?
I use something called SSI. SSI allows one to insert a webpage into another webpage. Here on LELOLA, the right and left scrollbars are updated via SSI coding. This way I am able to update the scrollbars by only updating their pages, and since all other pages on LELOLA have those scrollbar pages inserted into them, every page is updated.

To insert one page into another, you first need to create the webpage that's going to be inserted. This page is stripped of its header and footer coding since it's going to be a part of another page. It should be uploaded into the main file directory of your webspace.

A code is used to insert that page into another page. That code is as follows: <!--#Include Virtual="nameofpage.html"-->

Please note that SSI only works on some servers that allow it. Most free servers don't allow it. Also note that to have SSI work, you'll probably have to rename your webpages to ".shtml" instead of the standard ".html".

I know it's confusing, but I'm not the best person to explain it to you. If you're interested in SSI, try Googling it.

Can I translate LELOLA into another language?
I have no problems if you want to translate parts of LELOLA, in which this standard LELOLA policy applies.

If you want to know if you can translate all of LELOLA into another language, the answer is no. I can't read/write the language in question and therefore have no way reading or updating the translated website. Moreover, I update all the time and many updates are ones you don't see. The translated website would be up-to-date very rarely.

If you want to view a translated version of LELOLA, try an online translator such as Babel Fish. It's not the best translator in the world, but it works and it takes little effort.

Why are you no longer accepting submissions?
I don't have time. Back when I accepted submissions, I had lots of free time. These days, I'm rather busy. Besides school (which likes to eat my time), I'm involved in all sorts of activities and have hobbies that don't involve sitting in front of a computer all day. Submissions are very time and energy consuming.

In a nutshell: The time and energy that submissions used to consume is now being consumed by other activities.

Why are you no longer giving out awards?
I stopped giving out awards for the same reason I stopped accepting submissions.

What happened to LELOLA.com?
The answer to that can be found in the site's history.

Why does LELOLA go down from time to time?
General downtime happens from time to time for various reasons. There's not that much that can be done about it accept fix the problem to get LELOLA back on its feet again.

Otherwise, LELOLA does go down for a very short period of time regularly. This usually happens because the server is running fixes or backing up files. If you ever encounter this downtime, try again in ten minutes and it should be fixed.

Will LELOLA ever have a chat room?
No, because I cannot guarantee the content and safety of such a chat room.

Will LELOLA ever have an oekaki board?
Sadly, no. I'd love to have one, but I as I said above about chat rooms, I cannot guarantee its content and safety. Moreover, I don't have to the time to monitor it.

Does LELOLA have a message board?
Yes. You can find it here.

Where's LELOLA's counter? How do you know how many hits you have?
I lost track of my total number of hits a few years ago during a server move. I've had no idea what the grand total is since then. I do know vaguely, and I have all the statistical data since then.

My counter is the "lighting" blue "saturn" in the black square under "other" at the bottom of the right-hand scrollbar. I also get the servers data, which you can't see.

I know a site that is stealing your stuff! What should I do?
Let me know. There are some sites that are allowed to take certain items of mine. If you're not sure about a certain site, please feel free to ask me about it.

The same goes for any sites you find copying my style, my content, my images or direct linking my images. Please let me know about it!

I found a typo. What should I do?
If you find any spelling or grammar mistakes, please let me know where they are so I can fix them. I AM THE TYPO QUEEN!

I found a broken link. What should I do?
If you find any broken links, please report them to me so I can fix them. Chances are I don't know it's there. The same thing goes for images that don't show up. Please let me know!

You found a broken link? Darn. All I found was one wearing a sombrero.
