MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS

Is using anime images online illegal?
Yes. If you do not own the image or/and do not have permission from its owners, you're basically stealing.

Is LELOLA illegal?
Yay for grey areas!

What's wrong with using other people's fanart?
It's common courtesy not to use it. Artists generally don't want their images plastered all over the internet -- especially when they're not credited.

I've found that a lot of people don't know that it's wrong to steal fanart. Heck, when I first started LELOLA, I didn't know it was a bad thing. But an error doesn't become a mistake unless you refuse to correct it.

Most stolen fanart is taken from websites in another language (generally Japanese). This fanart is beautiful and many people feel the need to spread it around. The problem with this is that chances are the artist doesn't want their work used that way. Many people figure that since they can't read the language, then it's okay to take other people's fanart.

Wrong. Just because an artist doesn't say you can't use their artwork doesn't mean you're allowed to use it. Using stolen fanart is frowned upon by most of the online anime community, and there are many websites trying to prevent it from happening. The most prominent of them is Online Fanart Protection, which I encourage you all to check out.

Do you know of any good free hosting?
Not anymore.

How did you make your website?
I coded LELOLA in Notepad using the internet language of HTML.

Do you have any advice for starting a website?
Back in 2001, I read a great answer to this question in Pojo's DragonBall magazine. At the time, the DragonBall Z website community was thriving and a DragonBall Z webmaster named Jeff Maynes wrote an article about how to start a DragonBall Z website. Although not all of you want to start DragonBall Z websites, the advice holds true for other anime (and non-anime) websites as well. I've scanned the article (without permission), which you can read below. I hope it inspires you the same way it has inspired me over the years. ^^

How can I get a domain?
You can purchase one at a site like Register.com.

Please note that once you have a domain, you'll need webspace to direct the domain to. (I'm really not the best person to explain this.)

Do online petitions work?
Uh... read John's answer.

What happened to your "Fight 4 Escaflowne" petition?
For those of you that don't know, way back when FoxKids showed Escaflowne, they stopped airing the show halfway through. I made an online petition entitled "Fight 4 Escaflowne" to try and convince FoxKids to bring it back. I collected numerous signatures and even sent the petition to FoxKids on more than one occasion. Sadly, I never heard a reply back.

When FoxKids ceased to exist in North America, I took the petition down.

The show is available on DVD almost everywhere, so the outcome isn't that bad.

What is YTV? What channel is YTV?
YTV is a television station for youth in Canada. I'm not sure if it's available outside of Canada, but if you're interested in getting YTV, I suggest contacting your local cable service provider. For more information on YTV, visit YTV's website. ^_~

What is Cartoon Network? What channel is Cartoon Network?
Cartoon Network is an American television station. If you're interested in receiving the station, contact your local cable service provider. More information on Cartoon Network can be found at CartoonNetwork.com.

What is FoxKids? What channel is FoxKids?
FoxKids is the portion of Fox that shows kids programming. FoxKids disappeared in North America after it was basically bought by Disney and its programming moved to ABC/ABC Family. However, FoxKids still exists in many countries around the world.

What is FoxBox? What channel is FoxBox?
FoxBox is a section of children's programming Saturday mornings on Fox. The FoxBox is run by 4Kids Entertainment and shows their programming. It is not connected with FoxKids, except for maybe the fact that it replaced it.

What is Kids!WB? What channel is Kids!WB?
Kids!WB is the portion of the WB that shows children's programming. If you're interested in receiving the station, contact your local cable service provider.

I'm working on an original anime. Can you give me advice? What are the chances of it getting published/animated?
This is one of those questions I'm not fit to answer, but I'm going to try since I'm a firm believer in the idea that people can do anything they put their mind to.

I can't give you much in the way of advice except to persevere. A lot of people are going to tell you that you can't do it. You need have confidence in yourself and your work so that you can look them in the eye and show them you know what you're doing.

I have made my own season of Digimon. What can I do with my ideas?
The sheer amount of times I've been asked this is staggering. And I still don't have a good answer for it.

If you're asking me this, you probably want to know how to get your work published or animated. The chances of either possibility happening are slim, but where there's a will, there's a way. Since I've never gone looking for it myself, I'm not sure what that path looks like, but if you keep looking, you probably find it someday.

And then there's always fanfiction. It's a great creative outlet for your ideas.
