NARUTO
DUB EPISODE 2 -- "My Name is Konohamaru"
The following is my review for the second English dubbed episode of Naruto.
Blood coming out of one's nose = bad. They once again cut all blood that shot out of Ebisu and the Third's noses when facing Naruto's Sexy Jutsu. This seemed to make more sense this episode as last episode (when they left Kleenex in Iruka's nose). Also, there was some added dialogue to make it more seamless in this episode.
I love the fact Konohamaru calls the Third, "old man". That made me happy. Also, the use of "honorable grandson" by Ebisu was nice as well.
Ebisu's voice sounded a little bit off, and rather overdone. Every word didn't need to be overblown like that, but I must admit, Crispin Freeman has a pretty voice. And it made me laugh. I'm going to enjoy it when he returns again later in the series.
Colleen O'Shaughnessey does an excellent job of Konohamaru's voice. She also did Sora's voice from Digimon, and listening her as Konohamaru made me realize how much talent she has as a voice actress and also how bland Sora's character was at time. She also does the voice of Ino in the series, so it'll be interesting to see how she balances the roles.
The Third's voice sounded better and more natural in this episode.
I know this is never going to change, and that it's been there for a while, but they pronounce Naruto, "Na-rue-toe" in the dub. It's like the way they pronounce "Seshomaru" in the InuYasha dub. While it isn't wrong, it isn't right either. It should be pronounced, "Na-rue-to".
I forgot how amusing Knonhamaru was. My favorite moment of this episode still has to be when he tries to hide alongside the fence and does so my holding his camouflage the wrong way. XD
Naruto mispronouncing "chakra" as "quatre" was amusing. Although, it automatically made me think of Quatre from Gundam Wing...
They used the font "Papyrus" on some of their text edits.
This episode begins to hint at why I love this show so much. An overlaying theme appears when you realize the children of the village avoid Naruto because of feelings of negativity they inherited from their parents. This theme of "inherited hatred" comes back again and again in the series and makes a serious point about how the hatred we feel in our own lives can be unwarranted and unnecessary.
I love Knohamaru's declaration at the end of the episode that he and Naruto will become rivals. I also like Naruto's lines there. With tutoring Konohamaru, we're able to see a different side to Naruto that what was present in the first episode.
The dub was good for this episode. I'm looking forward to episode three. ^^
