2006/09/30---CN Anime 2006 photos are up!
|
My photos from CN Anime 2006 are finally up! X3 Check'em out!
My camera hated the lighting this year, so these photos aren't as good as they could be. Also, there's no con report due to my lack of time. But hey, there are a few hundred shiny photos! :D
I apologize for taking so long with these. School is eating me alive. On the plus side, my Anime Evolution coverage is almost done and should be up very very soon. :3

2006/09/29---Naruto Marathon Recap
|
YTV aired four back-to-back new episodes of Naruto tonight. My reviews of all four of them are up. My review for episode 45 is up here, episode 46 is up here, episode 47 is up here, and episode 48 is up here. They're some of my favourite episodes in the series. Check'em out! :3
If any of you watched the marathon, you may have noticed the five-minute long message YTV put on the screen during the last commercial break of the third Naruto episode. Basically, that message announced YTV's interest in creating an all-anime network ("The Anime Network") in Canada! W00t! I wish you luck, YTV! :D Let's hope the CRTC lets this pass!
Also, points to YTV for airing ads for the Naruto video game "Clash of Ninja 2" and an ad for the FMA movie on DVD during the commercial breaks. (It makes up for the fact, YTV announced FMA was coming up "next" at 9:30 instead of 10:00. =P)
"When I watch you, Naruto. When I watch you, I feel full of courage. I feel that I can keep going -- that I can succeed -- that even I am worth something."

2006/09/25---Tangled Web
|
The new pic and quote of the week are up. The pic features an image of Aya and Aki from Ayashi no Ceres. It's a little creepy, but it fits the characters, so I hope you like it.
In an attempt to balance out the pic, the quote of the week is slightly more uplifting and inspirational. It comes from the third episode of Prétear. :3
"I'm still an amateur! That's why I'm doing my best like this to improve by even a little bit!"

2006/09/22---Death Note trailer, more Viz wankage
|
A new two-minute trailer for the upcoming Death Note movie is out. You can see the trailer here. I swear, this movie is looking better and better.
As for the story of the week, ICv2 News has posted Viz's response to their edits in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. You can read the article here.
In YTV news, next Friday, YTV will be airing four back-to-back episodes of Naruto starting at 8pm.:3
Also, YTV will be airing Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie next Saturday at 4pm.

2006/09/18---In your own power
|
The pic of the week features Heero from Gundam Wing. The words on the pic are a Heero quote that would be the quote of the week if it wasn't for the fact that I've already used it. I think the pic and the quote on it match rather well. This pic was an experiment with textures, and credit for the texture I used goes to colorfilter. It has a different feel than my usual stuff, but I like it. :3
The quote of the week comes from Eureka 7. Holland says it in the first episode. (I wasn't sure how to credit this quote since he's quoting Renton.)
"Where you were born doesn't matter much. The spot a person needs is always right in front of their eyes."
-Holland, Eureka 7

2006/09/17---News Roundup
|
Via ANN, it seems that the upcoming Bleach game for the Nintendo Wii system, will introduce a new character named Altoro, "whose creation was supervised by Bleach creator Tite Kubo". He'll be voiced by Tomokazu Seki.
The official Japanese website for the upcoming Death Note anime is up here.
In news relating to TokyoPop's new online exclusive manga, TokyoPop removed some titles, ANN set up a poll that you may want to vote in, and ICv2 posted this article.
Jesse of Zannen, Canada reports that the CRTC has allowed G4TechTV in Canada to include 15% drama in its programming. You can read why this is a good thing here.
In fandom news, two panels of Viz's English release of the eighth volume of Fullmetal Alchemist manga were edited. (You can see the original and the edits here.) On ANN's message board and elsewhere, a giant fandom debate has exploded on whether or not this edit is a big deal, and whether or not Viz is evil for doing it. Personally, I find it amusing that the panel was edited to avoid controversy, but caused a giant one.
ANN has posted a poll regarding the issue. You can vote here.
Finally, those of you who like writing fanfiction might like this article.

2006/09/14---News, eh?
|
YTV is currently holding a Naruto contest for your chance to win one of ten Naruto prize packs. The contest runs until October 2nd, and is open to all residents of Canada (but you need parental permission if you happen to be under 13). You can read the fine print and enter here.
Anime North is holding a Halloween Dance this year. It will be held on Friday, October 27th at the JCCC in Toronto. Admission is $10 at the door. If you attended Anime North this year, you can get $2 off by bringing your pass. The doors open at 6:30pm. :3
The Japan Foundation, located in downtown Toronto, is currently running an exhibit on shoujo manga. I checked it out after class today, and I have to say that I was impressed. They've got a wide variety of shoujo manga dating from the 1960s to the present. They've got a few rooms set up with manga images framed on the walls, organized chronologically by author. There are prints, but also original manga pages and artwork. It's really neat to see manga in its raw form, with un-erased pencil lines, white out, and little edits. There's also information on the mangaka (from Osamu Tezuka to CLAMP), as well as the manga featured in the exhibit. It makes a really neat history lesson of shoujo manga.
The exhibit runs until October 4th and admission is free. If you have an hour or so and are in the area, it's worth checking out! :3
More information can be found here.
And while I'm at it, I might as well plug the Japan Foundation. If you're learning Japanese, have an interest in Japanese history, or are simply looking for a library that contains Japanese books and audio-visual materials, the Japan Foundation is a great resource in downtown Toronto. Getting a library card there is free of charge, and their doors are open to anyone. (I do research for some of my essays there. ^^;) They're also easy to get to, and are located on the second floor of 131 Bloor Street West, between St George and Bay subway stations.
In other news, Comic World News recently interviewed the webmaster of MangaCast, Ed Chavez. If you're interested, you can read the interview here.

2006/09/10---Endless moments
|
I was falling a little behind with my Naruto reviews. To make up for it, reviews for episodes 38, 41 and 42 are up! :3
Also, I just want to say something about the Bleach dub and Eureka 7. First off, the Bleach dub is really quite good. Johnny Yong Bosch makes an excellent Ichigo, and the other voices seemed good too. As for Eureka 7, I'd never seen it before. I was surprised at how well written and animated it is. The only thing that annoyed me was that they didn't translate Japanese text, including the episode name (the dub of Gundam Seed has the same problem). Besides that, Eureka 7 earned itself a new fan. :3
In other news, the pic and quote of the week are up. The pic features Usagi from a Sailor Moon artbook. I think the beauty of the image speaks for itself. I hope you like it. :3
The quote of the week comes from episode 41 of Naruto. It's part of a much larger speech that Sakura gives during her match with Ino.
"Ino. All along I've tried to live my life by what you said to me so long ago. I though that if I tried hard enough, I could do it -- that I could become a beautiful flower instead of a bud -- always waiting, but never blooming. So I set my sights on you, because I wanted to be like you from the start. You set an example for me that gave me a goal to strive towards, and it's because of that that I made it as far as I did. That's why I'm here today. But now I don't want you to hold back. It's time I surpassed you. If I don't face your very best, then there's no point."
-Sakura, Naruto

2006/09/08---Oh, TokyoPop...
|
In the news, it seems that retailers are angry about TokyoPop selling some of its manga exclusively on its website. You can read a good article explaining the issue here.
This reminds me of the uproar that followed when TokyoPop started selling to Walmart stores back in 2003. The small businesses who supported TokyoPop over the years and allowed it grow from a tiny company to what it is today, were angry with the decision since they couldn't compete with a giant like Walmart.
In other news, the official website for the second live-action NANA movie is up. The site features a trailer and can be found here. The film is due to hit Japanese theatres on December 9th.
"Maybe I can make him laugh to death."

2006/09/07---YouTube the evil
|
If you watch any Japanese media on YouTube, you may want to read this article. It reminds me a lot of this other article I read earlier this summer. It seems many Japanese companies really don't like YouTube all that much.
And on the opposite end of the spectrum, FUNimation has posted an exclusive trailer for the Fullmetal Alchemist movie on MySpace, which you can find here.
"OK, it's official. The sun has turned Palmon's brain into a french fry."

2006/09/05---A sacred memory
|
The new pic and quote of the week are up. The pic features an image of Sakura from CLAMP's Tsubasa manga that I found over at Clow Legacy. In the image, Sakura is holding one of her feathers, which is why the text on the pic is what it is. I hope you like it. :3
The quote of the week comes from episode 49 of Naruto and is said by Rock Lee. He believes that working hard can allow anyone to get stronger.
"Genius? What's a genius anyway? Even if I don't have talent, I'll surpass him with hard work!"
-Rock Lee, Naruto
