YU-GI-OH!
Yugi is a sweet kind-hearted boy who enjoyed playing the Duel Monsters card game. Oneday his life was turned up-side-down after he was given an ancient puzzle as a gift from his grandfather. Before he completed the puzzle, Yugi wished for true friends that would always stay by his side. He had a hard time at school and a boy named Jounouchi seemed to enjoy picking on him. But things soon changed for the small boy...
After completing the puzzle, Yugi felt another being within himself. Another presence from inside the puzzle was revived into Yugi's body. Now, Yugi shares his body and mind with an ancient pharaoh who seems to have strange connections to the Duel Monsters card game.
However, upon completing the puzzle, everything in his life changed. Soon, he gained true friends and even Jounouchi, the boy that once bullied him, ironically became his best friend.
And thus was the start of Yugi's adventures. Besides all the duel monster battles, this is the story of Yugi's experiences and tells of the challenges that faced him growing up. Evil is around every corner. Will Yugi and his friends be enough to defeat it? And will Yugi become strong enough to not only face the sprit within him, but himself aswell?
Welcome to the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!
The anime is based off a manga by Kazuki Takahashi. There are two anime series. The first one is titled "Yu-Gi-Oh!" and is based off the first few volumes of the manga. It tells the story of how Yugi gained his puzzle and how he gained the friendships that he has. It also deals with his first encounters with his dark half and the powers of the Millennium Items. This series was never brought to North America due to certain parts of the storyline and that fact that almost all North American companies love something called money. If you've ever seen this first series, you may understand why they didn't see it to be as profitable as the first.
The second series is called "Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters" and has many differences from the first. It's animated digitally and some of the character designs are a little different. One could argue that the first series is "darker", but with the direction the Duel Monsters is going, this is debatable. The second series is the series we all know and love from North American TV sets. This series continues Yugi and his friend's adventures.
Yu-Gi-Oh is so popular that both the manga and Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters are still running in Japan. The story is far from over. In fact, it's only just begun...
Note: This section mainly deals with the anime. If you're interested in the card game, there are many other sites that discuss it better than I can. And there's no point in me repeating what has already been said, ne?^^
