_________In Progress
I made this costume for my friend Sakuma for the Get Backers group we were throwing together. I had exactly twenty four hours to make this costume, and as much as I hate time limits, it still seemed to work out, and I got to eat and sleep. Yay! ^^;
I got a black shirt and a pair of black pants from Sakuma, so I didn't need to make those. So all I needed to make was the jacket, the skirt-thing and the giant fans.
I cheated on the jacket. I got Sakuma's measurements and then went to a used clothing store and found a suit jacket that would fit him. I altered the jacket to look the way Kano's does and added the collar and cuffs. I also added a zipper in the front to keep the costume together.
For the silver detail, I painted felt and attached it. I used velcro near the collar to make the costume easier to put on and off. I couldn't go out and get metal, so it didn't come out as nice as I would have liked. Ah well. It worked. The gold detail was made the same way. ^^;
The skirt-thing was fun. I used a heavy black material so I didn't need to interface it. I made a pattern out of newspaper and then made it. I only made one belt because I didn't have a reference for what the belts did in the back. I used two left over gold buttons from the Heero/Duo trench coats for the gold buttons on it. Since Sakuma needed his pants back afterwards, I rigged a system of safety pins to hold the skirt thing to the pants.
All the white detail was done with bias tape. It was my first time using it, but it still turned out well. I ran out of bias tape half-way through (I had only bought eight meters ><;) so I went out and got more. ^^;;
Since no one really knows the character anyway, and because I had ye old happy time-limit, I made one really large fan instead of two medium-sized fans. The fan was originally a wall fan, but it's been out of use for years. I taped it off and painted it. This thing ate acrylic paint like you wouldn't believe, so after two bottles of paint and less than two coats on the fan, I quit and dug up some old house paint that was the proper off-white color. That being said, the fan matches the walls in my dining room perfectly. ^^; I also added a purple tassel to it.
This costume should not have worked out as well as it did, but I'm thrilled at the result. And for something that was more of an experiment than anything else, I had loads of fun making this costuming. ^^ I can't wait to do it again.
Sakuma wore this costume on the Saturday of Anime North 2004. I'm so happy that everyone, and most importantly, Sakuma liked it, and it worked great for our little Get Backers photoshoot. ^^
_________Images
Ironically, this costume was the same colors as Blue Rose's Fay (Tsubasa) costume, and since Sakuma hung out with Blue Rise, lots of people thought they were from the same serious and took pictures of them together. Just eh... ignore the running shoes. ^^;
